Vaishnav Jana To Instrumental - Folk Version Vaishnav Jana To - a Bhajan dear to Mahatma Gandhi - has been recreated into an instrumental folk version by Doordarshan in association with Ministry of Culture. The track which is celebratory in nature is a tribute to the life and times of the Mahatma on his 150th Birth Anniversary. In an attempt to revive diverse folk instruments of our country, this version has been composed by Padmashri Bhajan Sopori by bringing together 60 folk instrument artists. The song has been picturised in different locations across India where Mahatma Gandhi visited or iconic cultural sites. #MahatmaGandhi #150Years #GandhiJayanti

As the 150th anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth begin – he was born in 1869 – the Indian government has pulled off something of a global cultural coup by having musicians from as many as 124 countries round the world to perform Gandhi’s favourite bhajan, Vaishnav Jana To.

With the shooting and recording by coordinated by Indian embassies around the world, the video above features 41 of these musicians. A statement by the Ministry of External Affairs said that local artistes were identified by Indian missions Abroad and asked to record their version of the hymn by 15th century poet Narsimha Mehta.

Mahatma Gandhi's favourite bhajan ‘Vaishnava Jan To’ goes global

As part of the 150th Birth Anniversary Celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, artists from over 124 countries have contributed musically in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi through his favourite bhajan 'Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye'. Today, on Gandhi Jayanti, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched a medley version of the famous bhajan by artists from over 40 countries, during the Closing ceremony of the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Conference in the presence of the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Gutierrez, External Affairs Minister Smt. Sushma Swaraj, Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation Sushri Uma Bharti and other prominent personalities.
  2. The famous Gujarati hymn was penned by the 15th century poet Narsimha Mehta and was one of the favourite bhajans of Mahatma Gandhi who included it into the roster of prayers routinely sung before his meetings.
  3. All Indian Missions abroad identified a local artists/group to record the bhajan in the run-up to Gandhi Jayanti. The result is an eclectic, colourful and rich rendition of the hymn infused with the local flavor of the region. From Armenia to Angola, Sri Lanka to Serbia, Iraq to Iceland, prominent local singers/groups have showcased their talent to this favourite hymn of the Mahatma. 1-2 videos from different regions of the world were then put together in a fusion video of about 5 minutes to give a flavour of the bhajan as recorded by different artists. It is expected to have contribution from all the countries recognised by the United Nations.
  4. Amongst the star performers is President Baron Divavesi Waqa of Nauru. President Waqa’s gesture was not just a special tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th Birth Anniversary but was also a personal gift from him to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The medley version, as well as the individual country contributions are available on the External Affairs Ministry’s Youtube page.
